History of St. James Episcopal Church

St. James is located in the small unincorporated community of Midway found "midway" between the towns of Sewanee and Monteagle. The church started in 1935 through the efforts of Dr. William Haskell DuBose. In 1947, the total amount of funds collected for a new building reached the sum of $525.  Even with that small sum, the people of the community rallied together to build the church building. The building was completed in 1948 and mission status was granted through the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee in 1958.

Today St. James is a thriving church with a spirited and growing congregation. An additional church building for worship was dedicated in 1990 and St. James continues to flourish. As a congregation, we are aware of God's abounding grace and share our gifts with each other and the surrounding community.
