St. James is in a small community that is unofficially named "Midway" because of its location midway between the towns of Sewanee and Monteagle. The church was begun in 1935, through the efforts of Dr. William Haskell DuBose. In 1947 the total amount of funds collected for a new building reached the sum of $525.00. Even with that small sum, the people of the community rallied together to build the church. The building, on it's completion in 1948, was named St. James Church and its mission status was granted in 1958.
Today St. James is a thriving church with a growing congregation. A new church was dedicated in 1990 and St. James has flourished under the direction of several vicars. As a congregation, we are aware of God's abounding grace and share our gifts with each other and the surrounding communities.
